The Empathy Experiment is an interactive decision-making experience visualising the effect of higher or lower empathetic behaviour. You choose how to respond to a series of workplace scenarios where a colleague experiences bias. The more empathetic your response, the more vivid and complex the visuals become.

I was the creative producer for this project. My team at Media.Monks evolved the concept proposed by the employee resource group WoMMen.in.Tech. We built the strategy, design and development. We collaborated with Diversity Standards Collective’s community council to adjust the character design, and Dr. Kimberly Nenemay, Psy.D, to finesse the script.

True diversity is more than representation—it’s a matter of inclusion and building an inclusive space starts with empathy. We created The Empathy Experiment to help improve people’s empathy skills. Developed with Dr Kimberly Nenemay, Psy.D and the Diversity Standards Collective, the WebGL experiment features characters with non-identifying, demographic-less features who react to your responses. The outcome is an evaluation of your choices, and techniques to improve your empathy. As in real life, there are no right or wrong answers, only different ways to colour the conversation.
